Certificates, badges and learning rewards: motivating staff to finish courses

5 min read

Assigning a course is easy; getting people to finish it is not. After a long shift, a “you should take this” training course slips to later. Self-learners are the same: an eager sign-up, a few lessons, then nothing. One simple way to keep momentum is to make finishing visible: a certificate, a badge and, for businesses, a real bonus on the payslip. This article explains the three kinds of recognition on CTAS Course and how to use them well.

Certificates of completion

When you finish a course that has a certificate set up, you receive a certificate of completion:

  • It carries the store’s name — the business or organization that published the course — because the store teaches it and sets the completion rules.
  • Each certificate has a unique number.
  • Learners find it under Certificates in the learner area or in the CTAS Learn Achievements tab.

Is a certificate a degree?

No. A CTAS Course certificate is the store’s confirmation that you completed the course under its stated conditions. It is not a degree or certificate within the national education system and does not replace qualifications issued by competent authorities or education institutions. Its value lies in the store’s reputation and the skills you actually gained. Details are in the CTAS Course terms of use.

For self-learners a certificate is still useful: it records what you learned, from which publisher and when. When sharing it with an employer, include the course, store name and certificate number, and be ready to show the skill itself.

For internal training that is exactly what you need: proof that staff finished and passed your own procedures, not a state qualification.

Badges: recognizing milestones

Badges are lighter than certificates and suit smaller milestones. Learners see them in the Achievements tab next to their certificates. They fit short courses where a certificate feels like too much — finishing an app guide or an opening-routine course, for example. The store decides whether a course awards a certificate, a badge or both.

Learning rewards in payroll

Businesses on CTAS Work have one more, very concrete option: they can tie a course-completion bonus to payroll. When staff finish an assigned course, the bonus goes onto the payroll instead of a manager remembering to add it by hand. That turns learning into recognized work rather than unpaid extra effort. Some tips:

  • Reward courses that clearly matter to the job, such as a new drinks menu or food hygiene, not every course.
  • Pair it with a quiz and pass mark, so you reward understanding, not just watching.
  • Set a due date when assigning, so the bonus lands in the right pay period.
  • Announce it upfront: which courses carry a bonus and on what conditions.
  • Keep amounts modest — enough to recognize effort, not so much that people rush for the money.

Combining the three

SituationSuggested recognition
Short guides (app usage, house rules)Badge
Job skills for staff (beverages, sales)Certificate + payroll bonus
Mandatory safety and hygieneCertificate with a pass-mark quiz

Motivation is more than rewards

Rewards keep the rhythm, but they cannot rescue a long, hard-to-follow course. The most lasting motivation is a short, practical course people can take on their phone during a break. See Microlearning: short videos for shift workers and How to create an online course with CTAS Studio.
